Lions Should Swoop in and Sign Jadeveon Clowney
By Michael Luciano
The biggest free agent still on the market by a wide margin is former Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.
The main reason Clowney hasn't signed yet is the fact that no team has been willing to meet his $20 million asking price or his desire for a multi-year contract. Eventually, Clowney will have to relent, as his asking price has been deemed too outrageous.
The Detroit Lions, in need of a pass rusher, should throw their hat into the Clowney ring.
With Detroit picking No. 3 overall, they will just miss out on selecting Ohio State star Chase Young. This leaves their 4-3 defense with Trey Flowers and Romeo Okwara as their starting defensive ends, which is clearly less than a stellar pairing.
While Clowney would have to reverse course on his desire to join a team capable of winning a championship if he joins the Lions, Detroit would be one of the few teams who could pay him what he's demanding. In addition, Clowney and Flowers off the edge would be a hellacious tandem.
Clowney can be one of the most impactful defensive players in the league on a game-to-game basis, but he'll need to lower his asking price if he wants to sign sooner rather than later. If/when he does, Matt Patricia should get him on the phone.
