VIDEO: Remembering Pirates' Lloyd McClendon Walking Away With First Base in Infamous Ejection Meltdown
By Will Coleman
There's nothing quite like watching a baseball manager storm out of the dugout to argue calls with an umpire, especially when it results in a mind-boggling ejection. In 2001, Pittsburgh Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon gave us just that. In a game against Milwaukee, the skipper took a page out of Lou Piniella's book and provided us with one of the most hilarious managerial ejections in MLB history.
Neither the Pirates nor the Brewers were the greatest of teams back in 2001, but what these sub-70-win clubs couldn't provide in talent on the baseball diamond, they made up for with an entertaining midseason game in June.
Pittsburgh catcher Jason Kendall looked to have beaten out a grounder up the middle before the first base umpire ruled him out with almost no hestitation. Kendall and first base coach Tommy Sandt couldn't believe themselves, but McClendon took it upon himself to do the arguing, shoving both of them aside and letting loose.
McClendon's tirade had everything you could ask for in a managerial ejection. He got right in the umpire's face, threw his hat, kicked dirt as much as he could... and capped it all off by walking away with the first base bag firmly in hand.
That's a new one.
Pittsburgh and Milwaukee needed 12 innings to decide this one, and the Buccos actually came away with a 7-6 walk-off win, but everyone will remember this game as the time McClendon managed to steal first base. Literally.
