Lonzo Ball Reportedly Received $130K Loan to Move Out of UCLA Dorm and Sold Jerseys and Shoes
By Ryan Flores
Lonzo Ball and his father, LaVar, could be in a whole lot of trouble if a new and troubling allegation is to be believed.
After Lonzo filed suit against former business partner Alan Foster for damages of more than $2 million, Foster counter-sued the New Orleans Pelicans guard and his father for fraudulent concealment and breach of contract. The details of the suit allege numerous financial improprieties.
Foster accused Lonzo of selling his game-worn Sweet 16 UCLA men's basketball jerseys and shoes for $80,000, which is against NCAA rules. Foster also claimed that he took out a loan for $130,000 for Lonzo's living expenses, as he helped net Ball an apartment, personal trainer, furnishings, food and more. Accepting such assistance runs afoul of NCAA regulations as well.
As of right now, it is unclear whether the NCAA will take action against Ball or his school. They would have to prove that Ball sold the apparel and received improper benefits from someone who is not part of his family while enrolled at UCLA. Based on precedent, the NCAA could rule that the Bruins program must vacate its 2016-17 season, which ended in a Sweet 16 loss against Kentucky, if such wrongdoing is found.
While this would be a truly bad look for an all-time historic program like UCLA, it would hardly be the worst-case scenario for the Ball family. The lawsuit battle between Foster and the Balls has grown uglier by the day, and will likely be a headache for the Pelicans while Lonzo is on the team, but for now, there is no criminal probe. We're merely looking at allegations made in a civil suit.
Hopefully, the Ball family and Foster are able to come to some sort of settlement before things have a chance to get out of hand. But given the extent to which drama tends to follow these people wherever they go, that's far from a safe bet.
