Los Angeles City Council Approves Resolution Begging MLB to Give Astros and Red Sox World Series to Dodgers
By Scott Rogust
The MLB sign-stealing scandal centered around the Houston Astros has had a negative effect on the rest of the league. Perhaps no one was caught more clearly in the crossfires than the Los Angeles Dodgers, who lost to both the Astros and potentially-tainted Boston Red Sox in consecutive World Series.
Now, the city of Los Angeles has stepped in to help them out.
The Los Angeles City Council has unanimously approved a resolution imploring the league to strip the Astros and Red Sox of their respective world championships, and award them to the Dodgers.
That...feels...like several assumptions too far down the line, doesn't it?
While that's all well and good, it's unlikely the league will comply with Los Angeles' request.
Commissioner Rob Manfred handed down his punishment to the Astros organization last week, resulting in the firings of manager AJ Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow, and the loss of $5 million and top draft picks.
Even though the electronic sign-stealing scheme was "player-driven," no one on the 2017 Astros roster was punished due to it being, in Manfred's words, "impractical and difficult" to discipline all involved. Players like Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve have yet to show accountability for the team's actions in 2017 and beyond.
While the investigation is over in Houston, Manfred will now move onto Boston, as manager Alex Cora was accused of using other illicit techniques during the 2018 season, resulting in a World Series win over the Dodgers. Cora was fired hours after the league's announcement of Houston's punishment.
Unless there's new groundbreaking evidence of cheating by specific players in specific moments, don't expect the Dodgers to be handed even a ribbon, let alone two Commissioner's Trophies.
