VIDEO: LSU Safety Grant Delpit Ran a Blazing 40-Yard Dash at Pro Day and NFL Teams Need to Stop Sleeping on Him
By Michael Luciano
Thought of as the premier safety in the country and in the 2020 Draft at the beginning of the season, LSU star Grant Delpit started to slide a bit as some of the combine stars usurped him in the pre-draft rankings. Delpit reminded us all that he is just as good as any of the other hot safety prospects at his Pro Day, as the 6-2, 213 pound safety ran a blazing 4.39 40-yard dash in Baton Rouge.
And yes, that's really what a socially-distant pro day looks like.
Delpit, a consensus All-American and Jim Thorpe award winner, is in the running for being named the best safety in the draft, as he is currently wrestling with Alabama's Xavier McKinney and Minnesota's Antoine Winfield Jr. for that title.
Delpit has the size, speed, ball skills, and athleticism needed to be an instant starter in the pros. Unfortunately, he has one fatal flaw. He is an extremely poor tackler, and that lack of physicality in his game might be enough to knock him out of the first round.
Whichever team takes Delpit, however, is getting a premium athlete for a safety of his size. Given his experience and stardom in the SEC, he should have a relatively smooth transition to the professional ranks.
Delpit is never going to be a Sean Taylor type who decleats people if they go over the middle, but he's a high-ceiling ballhawk that could start on Day 1 for your favorite team if they have a hole in the secondary.
