Mets' Skipper Luis Rojas Provides Update on Jed Lowrie and it Doesn't Sound Great
By Scott Rogust
The New York Mets brought in Jed Lowrie last year in hopes of adding a quality bat to their lineup. But, the signing never panned out. One year later, and there's still question marks surrounding Lowrie's status for 2020.
When speaking with the media on Sunday, Mets manager Luis Rojas said the veteran isn't ready to appear in Spring Training games just yet, because he has to get accustomed to wearing a large brace on his left leg.
That's not a good sign.
Lowrie showed up to the team's offseason facility with a massive brace on his aforementioned leg, which honestly makes him look like he's half-man, half-cyborg. Even though that sounds bad, he was able to field ground balls and participate in batting practice.
The Mets signed Lowrie to a two-year, $20 million last offseason, and so far, he's been limited to just seven at-bats in nine games due to knee, hip, hamstring and calf injuries. Brodie Van Wagenen even tried to trade Lowrie this offseason, but to no avail.
Hopefully once Lowrie sheds his cast he'll be able to produce in some fashion for the Mets in 2020, otherwise we could be looking at another frustrating campaign filled with vague updates on the 35-year-old.
