The New York Yankees have been much maligned in regards to starting pitching, but help could be on the way shortly.

Ahead of their game against the Seattle Mariners on Monday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said pitcher Luis Severino could begin his rehab assignment on Sunday.

The start of the right-handed pitcher's rehab assignment hinges on his 35-pitch simulated game in Tampa, Fla. on Tuesday. According to Yankees reporter Bryan Hoch, if Severino gets through the game without any issues, he'll be in line to begin his rehab stint in the minors on Sunday.

Severino has been out of action since Spring Training due to rotator cuff inflammation suffered in March. One month later, Severino was diagnosed with a right lat strain, further extending his time on the sideline. But as of the past two weeks, Severino has thrown off a mound without re-aggravating his lat injury.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman didn't make a move for a big-time pitcher, so the team is hopeful that Severino can return and make an impact in October.

Before he has a chance to return to the Bronx, the Yankees will have to see how Luis Severino performs in his simulated game on Tuesday.
