Luke Voit Could Miss 6 Weeks After Sports Hernia Surgery
By Ryan Giglio
While so much has gone the Yankees' way this year, the team has been bit by the injury bug countless times in 2019. Actually, it's getting a bit ridiculous.
On Tuesday, the theme of important Yankees getting hurt popped up again, as first baseman Luke Voit left a loss against Arizona after appearing to wince on a swing.
It was announced Wednesday that Voit sustained a sports hernia, and has now been placed on the 10-day injured list. Infielder Breyvic Valera was called up from Triple-A to take Voit’s spot on the roster for Wednesday’s game against the Diamondbacks.
Voit was a truly pleasant surprise in the last couple months of 2018 for the Yankees after being acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals last July. Voit's productivity has carried into 2019, as the 28-year-old has hit 19 home runs and 54 RBI and a 136 OPS+.
Surgery is possible for Voit, which would sideline him for six weeks. Yankees manager Aaron Boone also did not rule out that the latest injury could be related to the core muscle injury that sidelined Voit in June.
With just hours leading up to the Trade Deadline, general manager Brian Cashman could try to land a slugging first baseman to help in Voit's absence, or they could just wait for Giancarlo Stanton to come back from the IL.
The Yankees have a 7.5-game lead in the AL East. They're in pretty good position to make a big run, and with just two month left in the regular season, perhaps they won't need to make any moves at all in Voit's absence.
