Luke Voit Reveals He’s Switching Jersey Number to 59 in Honor of His Brother
Yankees first baseman Luke Voit has become almost synonymous with the No. 45 jersey during his short time in the Bronx. However, the days of Voit wearing those digits will soon be...numbered.
The 28 year-old infielder revealed via Twitter that he will be switching to the No. 59 jersey, in honor of his brother John Voit who played college football at West Point.
While this reasoning for changing his number is very sentimental and sweet, it's hard to imagine that the arrival of Gerrit Cole did not factor into this decision. After all, Cole has worn No. 45 for his whole career, and it's safe to assume he would have preferred to keep the number for the next decade he will spend wearing pinstripes.
With Cole taking over as No. 45 and Voit becoming No. 59, balance has been restored in the Bronx.
At the end of the day, the potential for the Bronx Bombers to chase a World Series with Cole is promising enough that we sincerely doubt Luke Voit will care what number he has on his jersey.
