Madison Bumgarner's Baseball Reference Page Was Updated to Include His Alter Ego and Rodeo Cash Earnings
By Jerry Trotta
One of the most bizarre storylines of the MLB's offseason emerged over the weekend when it was discovered that Madison Bumgarner has been entering into team-roping rodeos under an alter ego, and apparently has been doing so for a few years now.
According to The Athletic, the Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander has been entering the events under the name Mason Saunders.
Well, it didn't take very long for Bumgarner's baseball reference page to undergo an update acknowledging his outlandish second life. They added a special section to his page that dedicated to his alter ego, and even featured the 30-year-old's earnings from his ventures -- a cool $27,100.
Not too shabby, MadBum. We're not entirely sure how the rodeo business works, but winning $26,500 has to be considered a good day at the office.
For any fans of Bumgarner's wondering if this served as a distraction during the 2019 campaign, well, don't. The former World Series MVP apparently only attended two such events -- one in early March and December.
Still, the D-Backs couldn't have been thrilled to learn of Bumgarner's hidden hobby after doling out a five-year, $85 million contract his direction this winter.
That stance comes despite the fact that the three-time champion made it clear that he uses his right hand to rope. It goes without saying that competing in rodeos comes with massive injury risk.
Whatever the case, Bumgarner's alter ego is as official as it can be now. Baseball reference is as conclusive as it gets.
