Manny Machado Out Tuesday Against Giants After 1-Game Suspension Upheld
By Sean Facey
After a bit of a delay, Manny Machado will properly serve his suspension.
The San Diego Padres third baseman is not available for Tuesday's game against the Giants after his appeal of a one-game suspension for "aggressively arguing" and making contact with an umpire failed.
Machado was ejected from a June 15 loss to the Colorado Rockies after he expressed his anger with umpire Bill Welke. He was right in the face of Welke and tossed most of his equipment to the ground with force.
The altercation drew the suspension from the league and elicited a strong (and strange) reaction from the MLB Umpires Association, who ripped into not just Machado, but the league itself.
The player elected to appeal the suspension, but it only delayed the inevitable.
Machado has had a solid season for the Padres, though he notably wasn't selected to the All-Star Game. When they inked him to a 10-year, $300 million contract in the offseason, they may have been expecting a bit more, but his overall numbers are still healthy.
He's slashing .276/.349/.513 with 20 home runs on the year and 2.3 fWAR, the second-highest mark on the team. But on Tuesday, they'll have to find a way to win without him.
