VIDEO: Marcus Smart Helped off Court After Suffering Ankle Injury vs Suns
The Boston Celtics have yet another injury to deal with as Marcus Smart had to be assisted off the court in a West Coast battle with the Phoenix Suns. Smart cried out in pain and fell to the floor as his right ankle twisted outwards in an awkward fashion. Smart, often well-regarded for his toughness and no-nonsense style of play, was helped up by teammates before accepting some help to the Celtic bench.
The Celtics had a comfortable lead at the time of the injury, so his loss may not be felt as heavily for the remainder of this game. However, if he misses extended time, it could hinder the current Eastern Conference leaders.
This is another blow to a team that just lost starting forward Gordon Hayward to a broken hand for at least three weeks. Hayward had been averaging 18.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and shooting 55 percent from the field before his injury. This injury was just eight games into what was looking like Hayward's true return to All-Star form.
The venerable guard is often cited by teammates and coach Brad Stevens as a pillar of leadership on the court and in the locker room for the Celtics. Hopefully he's not out long term.
