Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto's Comments on Delayed Opening Day Due to Coronavirus Sure Don't Sound Good
By Jerry Trotta

ESPN insider Jeff Passan came out on Friday to claim that his sources adamantly believe they aren't expecting Major League Baseball to return until May at the absolute earliest.
That was a bitter pill for both players and fans to swallow, as both parties are now beginning to realize the severity of the coronavirus. There's simply been no information provided that should leave individuals in MLB circles thinking that play will resume soon.
That sentiment has apparently reached the Seattle Mariners' front office. General manager Jerry Dipoto offered up some worrying comments on baseball's return while addressing how his players will move forward during the league's hiatus.
The sentiment expressed by #Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto is widely shared in the industry: ‘We have no expectation of playing anytime soon.’’ https://t.co/tUy18tlqpJ

This certainly isn't the news any player or fan wants to hear, but it's really the appropriate way to think during these unprecedented times, especially with emergencies being declared worldwide.
The Mariners clearly don't want to part with baseball altogether considering most of the players at Spring Training who were given the option to return home opted to remain in Peoria. Per Greg Johns of MLB.com, only three players went home.
Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto says of 49 players still in Major League camp, only 3 have indicated they will return home now that they've got that option. So bulk of team will stay in Peoria and continue to train. All Minor League players are being sent home.

Several clubs around the league, like the New York Yankees, have decided to remain at camp. Like the rest of them, let's hope Seattle is taking the necessary safety precautions.
