Mariners' Keon Broxton Suspended for Hitting Umpire With Batting Glove
By Sean Facey
The little fit that Keon Broxton threw during his game against the New York Yankees on Monday has already come back to bite him.
The Seattle Mariners outfielder was slapped with a two-game suspension and was fined an undisclosed amount of money after a batting glove he threw made contact with home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez, leading to his ejection.
Unsurprisingly, Broxton is appealing the suspension, which means he can keep playing until his appeal is heard and a final decision is made.
Broxton, who's now playing on his fifth team in five years, has had a rough season at the plate. He has just 10 extra-base hits in 90 games with a depressing .526 OPS to boot, which likely contributed his frustration when Gonzalez wrung him up on what he believed to a bad pitch.
Of course, a bad season and a bad call are no real excuse to start throwing equipment around. It's one thing to argue balls and strikes, but it's quite another to start heaving whatever's available in all directions with no regard for what they might hit.
But hey, at least Broxton bought himself a little bit of time to try and improve upon his .173 batting average, which just so happens to be the sixth-lowest in all of baseball among players with at least 200 plate appearances.
