Marlins Release Statement on Savage Steve Irwin Tweet
By Parker White
Not only did the Miami Marlins get swept by the Tampa Bay Rays, their Florida neighbor, in a quick two-game set over the weekend, but their Twitter account sent a ruthless tweet that referenced famous zookeeper Steve Irwin's death.
It was kind of a destroyer-of-worlds type burn, and apparently it got them in a bit of trouble.
The Marlins and Rays Twitter accounts went back and forth with each other, quickly reaching a boiling point. Instead of admitting defeat or coming up with a more standard Miami's Twitter team went back at them, saying, "yOU'RE LITERALLY THE ANIMAL THAT KILLED STEVE IRWIN LOG OFF."
Ignoring the fact that the Rays have represented the sun's rays since a 2008 rebrand and not the animal, this blatantly out-of-bounds scream led to the Marlins issuing a statement on Monday.
The Marlins didn't say what the punishment was, but according to this statement, they've handled it internally. You can make the argument this person should be let go, but at the very least there should be some consequences here.
A bit off the rails, to say the least.
