Marlins Reportedly Calling Up Top Prospect Isan Diaz to Add Offensive Firepower
By Charles Nason
Looking to shake up their roster to potentially add some more pop at the plate, the Miami Marlins are calling up one of their top prospects from Triple-A. Isan Diaz has spent the year with the New Orleans Baby Cakes, experiencing a fairly solid year defined by the long ball.
Diaz was actually acquired by the Marlins in the deal that sent Christian Yelich to Milwaukee. Drafted as a shortstop, Diaz has since made the switch to second base. With Starlin Castro holding down that position for the Marlins, Diaz getting called up could shift him to third to open up space, or lead to Castro's ultimate departure.
Throughout the 2019 season, Diaz has constantly been a part of the MLB's top 100 prospects list. He even took part in the Futures Game during All-Star Weekend.
In New Orleans this year, Diaz is showing off his offensive skills with a .305 average, 70 RBI, and 26 home runs. With those stats, his call up from Triple-A has been a long time coming. He'll move to the majors alongside Lewis Brinson, who's already seen a fair amount of time in Miami this year.
Bringing up Diaz is a brilliant move for the Marlins. Over the past several years, the Marlins have, for some reason, constantly dealt away major offensive stars. Considering he was part of the deal that sent Yelich packing, Diaz could finally prove to be the payoff the Marlins were hoping for (or, at least, the start of it).
While they'll certainly have to tweak the configuration of players in the infield to make room for Diaz, they should see a major offensive boost just by his consistent presence.
Although there's been no formal announcement about Diaz from the team, he'll likely see his MLB debut come in next week's series with the Mets.
