Marlins Reportedly Trade Nick Anderson and Trevor Richards to the Rays in Last Minute Deal
By Karl Rasmussen
The Miami Marlins were active at the trade deadline, sneaking in a few deals just ahead of 4:00.
According to Craig Mish, the Marlins dealt a pair of arms, reliever Nick Anderson and starter Trevor Richards, to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for prospect Jesus Sanchez as well as reliever Ryne Stanek.
Anderson was enjoying an excellent season, logging a 3.92 ERA with 69 strikeouts and a save across 43.2 innings of work. He likely would have been the team's closer after Sergio Romo was dealt, but he too finds himself on the move.
Richards had a less than stellar year as a starter, as his 3-12 record points out. He was relegated to the bullpen before the trade, firing three scoreless innings since the demotion.
The Marlins get back a solid haul in this deal. Stanek, a relief pitcher by nature, but oft used in the opener role in Tampa, has logged a 3.40 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 55.2 innings. He's opened 27 games, appearing in 41 overall.
Sanchez is a highly regarded prospect and an excellent addition for the rebuilding Marlins. The outfielder was the Rays' No. 4 overall prospect, and he's ranked as baseball's 42nd best youngster. He's struggled at Triple-A this year, providing a .599 OPS across 18 games, but he's only 21 and has time to improve.
