The Philadelphia Eagles fired offensive coordinator Mike Groh after a disappointing performance in 2019. And even though he was axed, his vacated position wasn't filled, as head coach Doug Pederson announced he'll assume play calling duties in 2020. Even so, that's not stopping Pederson from making additions to the offensive coaching staff to help retake the NFC East this season.

According to reports Thursday afternoon, the Eagles are bringing back former offensive coordinator Marty Morhninweg to serve as a senior offensive consultant to Pederson.

After being fired as Detroit Lions' head coach after a two-season stint in 2002, Mornhinweg was brought in by then-head coach Andy Reid to serve as an offensive assistant in Philly. In 2006, he was promoted to coordinator, a role that he served for seven seasons until Reid and his staff were fired in 2012.

It's an interesting note that Pederson was on that Andy Reid staff alongside Mornhinweg for the final three seasons of that span. Additionally, Mornhinweg served as Pederson's quarterbacks coach while playing for the Green Bay Packers in 1995. The trust is clearly there.

Mornhinweg had two runs as an NFL offensive coordinator after his time in Philadelphia wrapped, one with the New York Jets (2013-14) and the other with the Baltimore Ravens (2016-18).

Despite Mornhinweg's addition, Pederson and the Eagles still have much work to do to improve their offense this offseason. But having a familiar face around certainly won't hurt matters from where Pederson sits.
