Masahiro Tanaka and Aroldis Chapman Made MLB History at 2019 All-Star Game
By Brendan Azoff
As has been the case plenty in recent years, the American League once again topped the National League by a final score of 4-3 in the All-Star Game. When Fox flashed the scoreboard while the A.L. was celebrating on the field, there were two Yankees pitchers gracing all of our TVs. Masahiro Tanaka and Aroldis Chapman both contributed mightily to the win, and the two made history in the process.
The first set of Yankees to pick up the win and the save in an All-Star Game may seem like a minor historical footnote, but when you consider all of the incredible players who have represented the Yankees as All-Stars, Chapman and Tanaka have achieved something that is pretty special.
Both pitchers looked dominant last night, with Tanaka tossing one inning of scoreless baseball striking out MVP candidate Cody Bellinger, and Chapman closing out the game by striking out the side in impressive fashion.
With Clayton Kershaw taking the loss, we couldn't help but call the box score a potential World Series scoreline, with Tanaka winning, Kershaw losing, and Chapman recording the save. That much still has to be determined, but for the Yankees pitching staff, their historical night in Cleveland is one they will not soon forget.
