Matt Nagy Even Having to Answer Questions About Mitchell Trubisky Starting Means He's Been a Failure
By Scott Rogust
Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has been under the proverbial microscope ever since he was selected second overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. Being a high draft pick creates lofty expectations.
Through nearly three seasons, Trubisky hasn't lived up to the hype, as exemplified by this Sunday's 36-25 loss to the New Orleans Saints. After the game, head coach Matt Nagy actually answered questions about Trubisky starting under center, showing how poorly the start of his career has gone.
While some will view the Trubisky criticism as harsh, you have to look at his fellow draft-mates. The Bears traded up one spot with the San Francisco 49ers in order to select Trubisky out of North Carolina. As a result, they left Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson on the board.
Both the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans respectively watched both drop and traded up in order to secure their franchise quarterbacks. Mahomes won the NFL MVP award in his first season as Chiefs starter, while Watson is an MVP candidate in 2019.
As for Trubisky, he's struggled with accuracy issues, especially to wide open receivers deep downfield. In less than three seasons, Trubisky has averaged just 6.8 yards per attempt.
A lot of this falls on the shoulders of Nagy, who's known as a quarterback guru and was supposed to take Trubisky to new heights. That's yet to happen, and even with Trubisky struggling, Nagy would be hellbent on throwing the ball.
Barring a bounce-back second half to the 2019 season, the question marks surrounding Trubisky will only grow.
