Mavericks Tried to Come up With a Relevant Michael Jordan Tweet Before 'The Last Dance' and Failed Big Time
By Adam Weinrib
OK, tonight's the first night with a significant event on the sports calendar in months, it's basketball-related, it features a ton of hype...this should be an automatic, closed-eye bullseye for any NBA team's social media squad.
Well, guess again.
On the literal only day in April when the tweets basically write themselves, as ESPN's vaunted Michael Jordan documentary "The Last Dance" premieres Sunday night, the Dallas Mavericks went for the moon and failed to land among the stars.
So, just to be clear, that's asking me, "What if...Michael Jordan and Luka Doncic glowed together?"
Yes, instead of, I don't know, a collection of MJ-Young Dirk face-offs, or a few choice Jordan highlights in Dallas, the Mavs went with a photoshopped image of MJ chatting with their current young buck, something that objectively...could happen in real life! They're both still alive. There's no action here. What if, indeed!
But, Kelsey...what if?
That's more like it. Lot to unpack here.
It's an enjoyable image to look at, for sure, featuring some very nice, dark tones. But something tells me that just about the same amount would've been accomplished here if Dallas had just emailed the image directly to Luka and made him smile during an otherwise-difficult quarantine.
