Max Scherzer Proves He's Aging Like a Fine Wine After Phenomenal Month of June

Hyun-jin Ryu's superb first half of the 2019 season coupled with Max Scherzer's shockingly rocky first couple months has prompted many skeptics and pundits in the world of baseball to coin the Los Angeles Dodgers' left-hander as MLB's current best starter over the Washington Nationals superstar.

Well, Scherzer heard all of our abuse and went out to record one of the greatest month's of pitching the game of baseball has ever seen, forcing all of his haters to tuck in their tails and crawl back under the holes from which they came.

In six starts in June, the three-time Cy Young was 6-0 with a microscopic 1.00 ERA while striking out 68 batters in 45 innings.

To put those mind-boggling numbers into perspective, he became only the fourth pitcher EVER to fan 68 batters while posting an ERA of 1.00 or lower in a month's time. While that stat seems cherry-picked, it's still incredibly impressive.

The others to record those numbers or better? Randy Johnson: 0.92 ERA and 68 K's in June of 1997; Pedro Martinez: 0.86 ERA and 71 K's in September/October of 1999; and Roger Clemens: 0.90 and 68 K's in August of 1998.

That's some all-time great company if we've ever seen it. Not to mention that Scherzer joined the group despite fouling a pitch off his face, breaking his nose and leaving him with a black eye.

Folks, just think about the sheer difficulty of lowering your ERA almost a full run within 30 days! It's virtually unheard of in the sport.

It's worth reiterating too, that Scherzer is 34-years-old. How he's maintained this level of all-time great dominance in his 12th big league season is just a testament to the popular notion that he's the best of his generation.
