Max Scherzer Stole a Base Saturday Because He Can Do Literally Anything
By Jerry Trotta

What did we do to deserve Max Scherzer? The three-time Cy Young winner is fresh off one of the greatest months of pitching in baseball history in which he finished 6-0 with a 1.00 ERA while striking out 68 batters across 45 innings in June. And he did so with a damn black eye. Now, however, Mad Max is flaunting his talents in a wholly different phase of the game: base-running. During the fourth inning of Saturday's contest against the Royals, he somehow managed to swipe a bag... without a throw!

No, we don't blame Kansas City starter Glenn Sparkman for paying next to no attention to Scherzer, but he could have at least pretended to keep him honest. Instead, the double play possibility was swiftly erased and presented the top of the Nats order with one out and a man on second.

There's just no way that a 34-year-old pitcher should be able to snag a bag without any kind of a play. But, as Max has proved time and time again over his brilliant 12-year career, he's as unpredictable and compelling as they come.
