Melvin Gordon Signing With Broncos Proves He Wants Revenge on Chargers
By Karl Rasmussen
The Los Angeles Chargers wisely opted against opening up their wallets to lock down RB Melvin Gordon when he staged a holdout last season. Gordon was demanding a lucrative payday, but the Chargers withstood his ultimatum and rolled with Austin Ekeler as the lead back instead.
Gordon hit free agency at the beginning of the new league year, and after his somewhat tumultuous exit from LA, has found a new home with a division rival.
According to reports, Gordon has latched on with the Denver Broncos in what feels like a revenge signing from the 26-year-old RB.
Gordon staying in the AFC West is a statement move, and he'll have the chance to stick it to his former team twice per year. Meanwhile, he'll no longer have to face a defense which has had his number throughout his career. Across nine games against the Broncos, Gordon has never scored a rushing touchdown, averaging 65.9 rushing yards per contest.
The former Wisconsin Badger will join the an already capable running backs room in Denver, consisting of the young tandem of Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman. He likely won't be a feature back in his new surroundings, though he could still carve out a significant role.
Last season Gordon featured in 12 games after concluding his holdout. He amassed 612 yards and eight touchdowns while catching 42 passes for an additional 296 yards and a score.
Now, he'll be taking his talents to Denver with a chance to extract revenge upon his old club on a regular basis.
