Mets Beat Writer Insinuates This Could Be Beginning of the End for Mickey Callaway
By Brendan Azoff
The Mets got off to yet another promising start this season, but now sit four games under .500 at the beginning of June.
There is no doubt the Mets have underperformed based on the talent that is on their roster, and when you see players like Robinson Cano, Edwin Diaz and Noah Syndergaard all struggling, it makes sense why they have not succeeded in 2019.
However, the key component to their lack of success is manager Mickey Callaway, and one beat writer made his thoughts clear after yet another disappointment from the Queens ballclub.
Tuesday night was another back-breaking loss for a Mets team that has seemingly had a lead escape their grasp in the late innings of every game.
During the loss, it was Callaway's decision to pull Syndergaard in the 7th inning that sparked the Giants, not allowing the big righty to get the third out. He brought in Seth Lugo, who proceeded to give up two hits and allow the runner on first to score, tying the game and causing the eventual 9-3 extra-innings loss.
There is truly no excuse for Callaway's poor management of the Mets pitching, and his decision making continually comes back to haunt New York. The Mets have a 105-117 record under the second-year manager, a far cry from where they hoped he would take them.
For Mets fans, the agony of watching this team continually blow games due to the lack of managerial consistency may be coming to an end soon after Tuesday night's brutal loss. But, as all of those fans will tell you, Callaway's firing can't come soon enough.
