Mets Better Not Even Think About Trading Jeff McNeil Despite Reported Outside Interest
By Chris Pyo
Jeff McNeil has been a bright spot for the New York Mets in the past two seasons. Not only has he produced at the plate, but he also found regular playing time at four different fielding positions, becoming the prototypical utility man talented enough to start at second and third base, as well as a corner outfielder.
With that type of talent comes a lot of interest from outside teams, and the market for McNeil has been heating up in recent days. That shouldn't matter at all to the Mets, however, as McNeil has got to be off-limits to the rest of the league.
McNeil had an amazing 2019 season for the Metropolitans, batting .318 with 23 home runs and 75 RBIs en route to being named an All-Star. He's a core offensive piece to the Mets' future, along with Pete Alonso and Michael Conforto.
It would be outrageous for Brodie Van Wagenen to even consider trading McNeil under any circumstances. He doesn't approach arbitration until 2022 and will be under team control until 2024.
Unless the Astros offer something along the lines of Carlos Correa for McNeil straight up, there's no reason why anyone should expect to see him in anything other than white, blue and orange at Citi Field to start off the 2020 MLB season.
And honestly? Mets fans might not even like the idea of a McNeil for Correa trade straight up at this point.
