Mets Braintrust Shouldn't Survive Wasting Another Cy Young Jacob deGrom Season
By Jerry Trotta
The emergence of Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil and JD Davis, paired with the utter woefulness of Edwin Diaz and Jeurys Familia in the bullpen have grabbed almost all of the New York Mets headlines in 2019.
Lost in that commotion was another season of sheer brilliance from Jacob deGrom, who all but locked up his second consecutive Cy Young award with seven shutout innings against the Marlins on Wednesday night. It was his third consecutive start with seven shutout innings, as he finished the campaign spinning 23 straight scoreless frames.
What does all of this tell us? That the Amazins' front office is getting away with murder as it pertains to deGrom's dominance.
To think that the Mets failed to make the playoffs in the two years that deGrom will win two Cy Young's is nothing short of a calamity. The three-time All-Star should be conducting the World Series charge of a perennial contender, not clearing out his locker room for the offseason.
The Metsies offense, though it endured a few slumps throughout the year, was deep enough to make a postseason surge. The pitching staff, though not perfect, was one of the best in baseball and had been there before. And yet, Brodie Van Wagenen and Co. opted to not address the one vital flaw of his club -- the bullpen.
Just look at deGrom's numbers in 2019, folks.
That's pitching excellence that deserves a postseason stage.
New York's front office incompetence is wasting the career of the best pitcher in baseball and they -- Jeff and Fred Wilpon, as well as Brodie -- do NOT deserve to retain their respective positions in 2020.
