Mets' Carlos Beltran Hire is an Absolute Home Run
By Parker White
It's easy to make fun of the New York Mets as all their decisions seem to end with a dumpster fire, but their latest addition is a perfect fit.
After just two seasons, the Mets fired manager Mickey Callaway and began their search for their next skipper. It was a long process and they interviewed plenty of candidates, but in the end, they hired former player and first-time manager Carlos Beltran.
I know Beltran doesn't have any experience and it's always a gamble when handing over a big job like this in New York, but that shouldn't phase him because he played here, including for the Mets.
Beltran will know how to handle the media, which is half the battle.
Beltran was a great player and is a borderline Hall of Famer, but that doesn't mean he didn't understand what the 25th player on the roster was dealing with. His teammates gravitated towards him during his playing days, and there's no question about his knowledge of the game.
Obviously, being a player and being a manager are two totally different things. However, Beltran is known for being easy-going, whether that was with his teammates or the media. We'll see if he can translate that to managing, but being able to handle the outside world is part of his job, which he's done with flying colors in Major League Baseball for 20 years.
Oh, and his ability to communicate with the Latin players in this organization can't be overlooked.
Joe Girardi was the name every Mets fan was clamoring for, but they ended up with Beltran, who might end up being the best of the bunch.
