Mets Completely Screwed Over Adeiny Hechavarria With DFA 1 Day Before Contract Bonus

The New York Mets made an addition to their infield Friday, signing former San Francisco Giants second baseman Joe Panik. That's a huge addition, especially with the serious injury to Robinson Cano.

However, as we know, when you add someone to roster, another player must be sent packing. In this scenario, that unfortunate player was veteran infielder Adeiny Hechavarria, who was designated for assignment.

This couldn't come at a worse time for Hechavarria, as the veteran infielder was owed a $1 million bonus if he was on the roster tomorrow.

To make this even more crushing for Hechavarria, he gave the Mets permission ahead of time to outright him, which means he can't become a free agent and can't refuse a minor league assignment.

So, the veteran shortstop is guaranteed to spend the rest of the season in the minor leagues, because if he spends one day in the majors with the Mets, they owe him that $1 million bonus.

While this seems shady, you can't blame the Mets for signing Panik and bagging Hechavarria. Panik is clearly a better offensive option, as Hechavarria is hitting just .204 over 60 games. Both are capable defenders, and the former is a natural second baseman, which is a position of need after losing Robinson Cano.

You can understand why he'd be chapped, but the Mets still owe him the remainder of the $3 million he signed for this offseason. If he could hit, this probably wouldn't have happened.
