Mets' Contract Negotiations With Zack Wheeler Reportedly Not Progressing
By Michael Luciano
Despite pitching with incredible renewed vigor following the trade deadline, it doesn't appear likely that the New York Mets will reach an agreement on a long-term contract with starting pitcher Zack Wheeler anytime soon.
The hard-throwing right-hander, who hasn't allowed a run since surviving the trade deadline, is scheduled to hit free agency at the end of this season. While the Mets had hoped to sign their promising pitcher to a deal in order to avoid a bidding war, talks have hit a snag and an extension is unlikely.
Following two straight scoreless starts after the deadline, Wheeler has lowered his ERA to 4.20 on the season. While he had some trouble keeping the ball in the yard and avoiding the big inning, ageless pitching coach Phil Regan and impeccable command of his breaking balls have allowed Wheeler to pitch the best baseball of his career.
With a 3.44 FIP and a 3.74 xFIP, the analytics show the Wheeler is outperforming his ERA, and is likely going to ask for a contract that the Mets might either be priced out of or are unwilling to match.
Be it in New York or elsewhere, Wheeler's excellent second half will earn him a huge payday this offseason.
