Mets Fan Favorite and Long Island Ducks Manager Wally Backman Arrested Following Domestic Dispute
In recent months, nothing but good news has followed the New York Mets. Well, that all changed in a flash over the last week and got even worse on Friday.
According to multiple reports, former New York second baseman and current Long Island Ducks manager Wally Backman has been arrested following a domestic dispute with a woman.
According to Newsday's Robert Brodsky, Backman was arrested in Riverhead on charges of second-degree harassment and fourth-degree criminal mischief. He will be due back in court on Sept. 22.
Backman is still beloved in Flushing, as he spent nine season with the Mets beginning in 1980. His best campaign came in 1985, where he hit .320 and posted 124 hits in 145 games. He followed that up with an admirable showing in 1986 and helped the Mets win the World Series.
This latest news sure is worrisome, though.
Backman is in his first season as manager of the Long Island Ducks. His coaching career began back in 1997 with Catskill. He worked his way up to manage the Mets' Triple-A team, but was fired in 2016.
The Ducks have yet to release a statement on the incident.
