Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen Claims Noah Syndergaard is No Longer Available and He's Rejected Offers
By Parker White
The New York Mets, heading into the offseason, will be forced to strike the balance between filling holes and keeping a very solid core in place. Last deadline (and the offseason beforehand), Noah Syndergaard's name came up often enough in rumors that it seemed like he was fated to be traded, creating another rotation gap in Flushing.
Well, not so.
GM Brodie Van Wagenen admitted on Thursday that teams have called about Syndergaard, but he's shut that down officially. Thor is no longer available, if he ever truly had been before.
This has changed over the last several months, as by all accounts, Van Wagenen was dangling Syndergaard around during the trade deadline, and as part of a Gary Sanchez/JT Realmuto swap in early 2019.
However, he now has a better understanding of what his players are worth and isn't willing to part with a talent as great as Thor, even though he's underachieved in recent years.
Despite Syndergaard not having reached the peak of his powers like his teammate Jacob deGrom, who has now won the Cy Young Award two years in a row, there's still a lot of talent in that right arm, and you can understand why the Mets don't want to give up on him at the moment (without being potentially overwhelmed).
That obviously hasn't happened, so Van Wagenen will keep Syndergaard around in hopes that he becomes an ace-level pitcher.
