Mets Have Reportedly Reached Out to Astros About Carlos Correa Trade
The Houston Astros are reportedly considering the idea of trading Carlos Correa due to the team's payroll situation. The slugging shortstop under team control through 2021 before he will command a major deal.
The New York Mets are the first of what should be several teams to consider the idea. Such a trade would be a huge splash for a Mets team seeking a new identity under manager Carlos Beltran.
Amed Rosario was the team's shortstop in 2019 and posted a 1.8 WAR with a slash line of .287/.323/.432. Correa has amassed a career WAR of 21 in five seasons and slashed .279/.358/.568 in 2019.
The Mets are undergoing a change in ownership and should become big spenders once that transition is made, but acquiring him this offseason would not drastically increase payroll. Sounds like a Mets-like formula to us.
Robinson Cano comes off the books in 2023 and new ownership should be more than willing to pay Correa when the time comes should they acquire him.
The Mets have the pitching staff required to compete for a championship. Pete Alonso emerged as a star in 2019 and the team showed promise with a nice turnaround after a rough start.
One more star could be what it takes to reach the next level, and acquiring Correa while he is in his arbitration years would be a shrewd move for an otherwise head-scratching franchise.
