Jacob deGrom Wins NL Cy Young Award for 2nd Straight Season
By Jerry Trotta
Some of MLB's most significant seasonal awards are set to be announced on Wednesday, and the league has just disclosed the night's first winner.
New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom has been tabbed the NL's Cy Young Award winner for the second consecutive season.
After his historic 2018 campaign, many pundits within the baseball industry expected deGrom to take a step back in 2019.
While that prediction held some value for the first month of the year, the 31-year-old right-hander was nothing short of sensational the rest of the way. For the season, he logged an 11-8 record to go with a 2.43 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 255 strikeouts in 204 innings pitched.
In the end, deGrom won in a sheer landslide as he received 29 of a possible 30 first-place votes. Further, the three-time All-Star was the only pitcher listed on every ballot.
While Hyun Jin-Ryu, Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg mustered their own impressive seasons, deGrom was truly the only choice for this year's Cy Young.
The fact that he's won the award in back-to-back seasons in spite of the Mets' incompetence makes the feat THAT much more impressive.
