Mets Manager Search Reportedly Down to 4 Candidates
By Karl Rasmussen
The New York Mets have really dragged out the process of replacing Mickey Callaway. Now onto their third round of interviews, it seems they're finally whittling down their shortlist to a group of four remaining candidates.
Per Jon Heyman, the four candidates still in play to become the Mets' next skipper are Tim Bogar, Eduardo Perez, Derek Shelton and Carlos Beltran.
Bogar currently serves as the first base coach for the Washington Nationals. He spent his first four seasons in the major leagues with the Mets. The 52-year-old coach boasts an impressive resume, having won Manager of the Year at the Rookie, Class-A and Double-A levels. He's been in his current role since 2018.
Perez, on the other hand, had a 13-year career in the big leagues before joining ESPN as an analyst. He's worked in the past as the Marlins hitting coach and a bench coach for the Astros.
Shelton is currently with the Twins working as a bench coach, but he was included in the final round of interviews for the Mets. He previously worked as a hitting coach in Cleveland and Tampa Bay, as well as a quality control coach in Toronto.
As for Beltran, he had the most memorable playing career of the aforementioned group, and spent a significant chunk of his playing days with the Mets. This would be his first foray into managing, but he is well-respected around the league, and would be great at building relations with his players.
Success is all the Mets are looking for in 2020, as anything short of a postseason berth would be deemed a major failure.
