The New York Mets failed to reel in a big-name acquisition this offseason despite speaking with the Cleveland Indians about shortstop Francisco Lindor and the Boston Red Sox about Mookie Betts.

We knew a lot about Lindor, but according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets "made numerous calls and exchanged several various concepts" with the Red Sox for Betts.

Once negotiations were underway, the Mets immediately told the Red Sox that utilityman Jeff McNeil was off limits due to their high opinions of him and the fact that Betts is entering the final year of his contract.

Instead, the Mets countered with trade packages that included one of Brandon Nimmo or JD Davis, and one prospect in either Andres Gimenez or Ronny Mauricio.

According to SNY's Andy Martino, their chances of a successful trade were slim, as the Mets would've had to find a way to part with the big contracts of Yoenis Cespedes or Jed Lowrie, which was a difficult task. Hence, no trade went down.

Instead, the Red Sox traded Betts and starter David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Alex Verdugo, infield prospect Jeter Downs, and minor-league catcher Connor Wong.

Credit the Mets for trying to bring in Betts and Lindor, but after making last year's blockbuster move for Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz, it wasn't going to be easy for New York to swing another big transaction this offseason.
