Robinson Cano's potential season-ending injury has left the surging New York Mets with a gaping hole at second base. Luckily for Mickey Callaway's crew, a replacement option might have cropped up following the release of Joe Panik.

The former San Francisco Giants All-Star was DFA'd after hitting just .235 this season. Panik, who was born in Yonkers and went to college at St. John's, is drawing interest from the Mets as a potential replacement.

Panik's statline may not paint the most flattering picture of him, as his .235 average, three home runs, and 69 OPS+ declare that he is a floundering hitter that is washed up. However, Panik remains an above-average glove at second base and a decent contact hitter.

With so few options remaining on the market, and with the Mets hesitant to head down to Triple-A Syracuse to find a replacement, Panik could be the most desirable option for the Mets.

A tad uninspiring, sure, but it likely makes more sense for a team gunning for a Wild Card spot to add a wily veteran than a random infielder from the minors.

Panik's celebrated Giants tenure has come to quite the unceremonious end, but he could land on his feet in Queens.
