Mets Reportedly Interested in Former Cy Young Winner Rick Porcello
By Mark Powell
How will the Mets answer the Phillies signing one of their own in RHP Zack Wheeler?
It seems we have an idea.
New York is reportedly interested in signing free agent hurler Rick Porcello. While the former Cy Young Award winner has fallen off in recent years, this is still a high-upside signing that could pay off should the Mets revive his career.
Porcello is a Morristown, NJ, native, so it makes sense he'd want a homecoming of sorts at this stage of his career. The 30-year-old is unlikely to receive a rich deal this time around, especially after landing an $80 million contract with the Red Sox and fizzing out at the end of it.
Porcello is fresh off the worst season of his career, going 14-12 with a 5.52 ERA in Boston. There's isn't much interest in Beantown to retain Porcello's services, and you can't really blame them given the quality of his 2019 campaign.
Mets fans won't riot at the signing of Porcello, but Brodie and Co. ought to have a better response to losing a core rotation piece. Should that be the case, a flyer on a former Cy Young winner isn't a bad move.
