Mets Reportedly Release Veteran Outfielder Matt Kemp
By Jerry Trotta
Back in late May, the New York Mets signed veteran outfielder Matt Kemp to a minor-league deal after he was released by the Cincinnati Reds earlier that same month. At the time of his discharge, the three-time All-Star was rehabbing a broken rib and never actually made it to the Mets big league roster upon his return.
Well, club writer Michael Baron has just reported that New York has released Kemp in perhaps the least surprising news ever.
Congratulations, Brodie Van Wagenen. You finally made a roster move that the Metropolitan fan base can whole-heartedly agree on. We'll let his decision to sign Kemp in the first place slide as the Amazins were desperate for outfield depth at the time.
Juan Lagares, Carlos Gomez and Rajai Davis were the only healthy, natural outfielders that Mickey Callaway had at his disposal for a two-week span in late May and early June.
As Hot Stove Stats humorously points out, it's really okay if you forgot that Kemp was a part of the Mets organization. We'll even concede that we forgot he was scrapping it out in club's minor league system.
It remains to be seen if the 34-year-old, oft-injured vet will have a market for his services. He's simply been a shell of his 2018, All-Star self thus far in 2019.
