Mets Reportedly Sign Former Red Sox Infielder Eduardo Nuñez
By Jerry Trotta
It would appear that Brodie Van Wagenen's claims that his New York Mets were finished filling out their roster for the 2020 season weren't exactly straightforward.
MLB insider Jon Heyman reported on Friday that the Mets signed veteran infielder Eduardo Nuñez to a minor league contract.
Nunez put together a few standout campaigns with the Red Sox from 2017-2018, and was even a significant contributor on the club's run to the World Series.
However, his career took a seismic turn for the worse this past season. The 32-year-old slashed a paltry .228/.243/305 across 174 plate appearances for Boston in 2019 before being designated for assignment in mid-July.
Nuñez went unclaimed after being DFA'd, and he will surely use this unforeseen opportunity to fight for a bench spot on the Mets roster.
Given the lack of depth behind the likes of Amed Rosario, Jeff McNeil and Robinson Cano in New York's infield, the former All-Star will have a decent shot at doing just that.
