Mets Reportedly Willing to Trade Struggling Reliever Edwin Diaz
By Charles Nason
Edwin Diaz's time with the New York Mets could come to an end just about as quickly as it started. It was recently reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan that the club is willing to part ways with the reliever with the trade deadline just a week away.
However, the only way a deal involving Diaz will take place is if the Mets lower their demands for him. At this point, a move seems unlikely given how much would be demanded, but given Diaz's struggles this year, the Mets may just feel compelled to lower their asking price in order to get a deal done.
Diaz's stats speak for themselves, and the story ain't pretty. He is 1-6 on the year with a 4.61 ERA through 39.1 innings, so it's safe to say that his performance on the mound hasn't exactly panned out the way the Mets were hoping for when they acquired him from the Mariners last December.
Being involved in such a significant deal in the offseason makes it difficult to estimate what Diaz would be worth now given his slump. If the Mets hope to move him, they're going to have to lower their standards, period.
With so little time until the MLB trade deadline, it could be difficult for the Mets to find a proper suitor here. That means that Mets fans may have to struggle through this strange Diaz saga for the remainder of 2019.
Whether or not he finishes the year in New York, this guy needs to find a way to turn his luck around.
