In a season where practically nothing has gone right for eight-time All-Star Robinson Cano, he's made some rather unexpected progress from his hamstring injury.

The veteran New York Mets second baseman is already preparing to take live batting practice despite numerous reports that his torn left hamstring would sideline him for the rest of the season.

It's certainly unexpected news. The Mets were so resigned to the fact that Cano wasn't going to return that they went out and snagged Joe Panik in the hopes of finding some semblance of a reliable starting second baseman.

Yet, the 36-year-old is now seemingly getting close to starting an improbable rehab assignment.

Though 2019 has primarily been a down year at the plate for Cano, he found his groove in mid-July. He put up an .896 OPS in 21 games from July 12 to Aug. 4, but his injury took him out of action. He has, however, maintained hope he'll play again this year.

The Mets, who are in the thick of the Wild Card hunt, would benefit greatly from his possible return.

His status will certainly be something to keep a close eye on down the stretch.
