Mets to Give Carlos Beltran In-Person Interview for Managerial Vacancy
By Michael Luciano
Plenty of New York Mets fans want to hand the managerial job left vacant by Mickey Callaway's departure to former New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi. However, one of Girardi's former players and a productive Met for the better part of a decade could be next in line for the job.
Nine-time All-Star Carlos Beltran, who played more games for the Mets than any other team, will get an in-person interview for the Mets' managerial spot. He is currently a special adviser to Yankees GM Brian Cashman.
Beltran interviewed with the Yankees for their managerial vacancy in 2018, but the job was given to Aaron Boone.
Beltran, who hit 435 home runs and stole 312 bases in his career, signed with the Mets in 2005 after seven years as a Kansas City Royal and a half-season as a Houston Astro. Beltran hit 149 home runs and stole 100 bases in his seven years as a Met. In 2011, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants in a package that brought back Zack Wheeler.
Beltran has no managerial or coaching experience in the majors, but neither did Boone, and he's been a smashing success in the Bronx. Beltran would be an out of the box hire, but that could be just what this team needs. The last time they went the traditional way (i.e. hiring the best assistant on a good team), they hired Callaway and got severely burned.
