Mets to Reportedly Consider Carlos Beltran as Manager if They Fire Mickey Callaway
By Jerry Trotta
It remains to be seen if Fred and Jeff Wilpon, in addition to Brodie Van Wagenen, intend to stick with Mickey Callaway as manager of the New York Mets for the final year of his contract in 2020.
There hasn't been much talk of a decision (in either direction), but Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic has reported that the Amazins' will consider hiring Carlos Beltran should they choose to part ways with Callaway.
Two of New York's execs, vice president Allard Baird and special assistant to the GM Omar Minaya, share a relationship with Beltran that date back to his playing days.
Upon retiring, Beltran asserted his intentions to become an MLB skipper before too long and he even interviewed for the Yankees gig back in 2017 before he was ultimately coined a special adviser to general manager Brian Cashman the following year.
Of course, Beltran also has significant ties to the Mets' organization. He played seven seasons in Queens after signing a seven-year, $119 million contract in 2006. He was a five-time All-Star with the club, personifying an elite glove in center field and a stalwart in the middle of the lineup.
It remains to be seen how sturdy of legs this rumor is standing on, but its certainly one to keep an eye on in the coming days, assuming the Mets intend to settle on Callaway's future within the next week.
