Mets Trade Outfielder Keon Broxton to Orioles
By Parker White
Less than a week after being designated for assignment by the New York Mets, outfielder Keon Broxton has been traded to the Baltimore Orioles. In exchange, the O's will send $500,000 in international bonus pool money to Flushing.
Baltimore also claimed right-handed pitcher Chandler Shepherd from the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. To make room on the 25-man roster for both of these acquisitions, the Orioles have moved starter Alex Cobb to the 60-day IL and designated right-hander Yefry Ramirez for assignment.
The Mets were hoping that acquiring Broxton from the Milwaukee Brewers back in January would give them much-needed outfield depth. However, in 34 games (49 at-bats) the 29-year-old slashed an utterly miserable .143/.208/.163 with 1 double and 2 RBI.
This is a high-upside deal for the rebuilding Orioles, however. Broxton did mash 20 home runs just a couple years ago, and he's a human highlight reel with his glove in center field. Broxton has the potential to be an everyday outfielder for the humble O's, and will have a chance to prove what he's really made of if he gets regular playing time at Camden Yards.
