The Mets Aren't Firing Mickey Callaway Because He's the Perfect Puppet
By Jerry Trotta
The New York Mets' roller coaster 2019 season has finally concluded, and the impending offseason leaves the franchise's braintrust with a plethora of issues to address before spring training arrives in a few months time.
One of those dilemmas is the future of manager Mickey Callaway, a guy that plenty of fans in Queens would love to see canned by the end of the week. And while there's no doubting that Callaway has been an utter calamity from a managerial perspective in his two-year spell, something tells us that he might still be commanding the Amazins' 2020 odyssey regardless.
For starters, general manager Brodie Van Wagenen couldn't find a better puppet on the open market if he tried.
In addition to the significantly relevant factors that Yahoo Sports' Matt Ehalt notes is the fact that Mickey's roster seems to admire and play for him. How many times in 2019 did pundits label the Metsies as dead in the water?
Let's take it back to when Callaway's club blew a six-run lead in the ninth inning against the Nationals in the first week of September. Virtually every baseball writer across the country said the Mets would subsequently tailspin, and rightfully so given their track record.
That was anything but the case. They showed up for Callaway in the closing month and weren't eliminated from playoff contention until the season's final weekend. There must be something to be said for their persistent resilience, no?
Should Callaway be given the old heave-ho, he would stand as the first manager in Mets history to be terminated with a winning record in his first two seasons at the helm. On top of it all, he has another year remaining on his contract.
If the decision came down to merit, Callaway would've been gone yesterday. But he has a lot of dynamics working markedly in his favor and we wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Wilpons and BVW held onto him for 2020.
