Despite not scoring a run since their explosive first inning against Tyler Glasnow, the Astros entered the eighth still in a solid position thanks to the efforts of Gerrit Cole. However, Houston was not satisfied. Michael Brantley added to the cushion, hitting a solo shot to extend the lead.

The Rays put up a good fight given the hole gifted to them by Glasnow, but Cole established his fastball early, complimenting his high-velocity pitch with breaking stuff to make the Rays' knees buckle.
