Mickey Callaway's Comments After Another Bad Edwin Diaz Outing Will Enrage Mets Fans

Edwin Diaz, one of the New York Mets' top offseason acquisitions, has struggled all season long. He's time and time again been called upon from the bullpen to put out fires only to come in and make them worse.

And the cries of Mets fans desperately calling for a change have fallen on deaf ears.

Manager Mickey Callaway said "he's going to continue to get big outs for us," of Diaz, and that despite another rough outing on Sunday, he still plans to use him in high-leverage options. In other words, the Mets faithful needs to get used to seeing him mess up.

Diaz has looked nothing like the reliever who slammed the door a league-leading 57 times last year for the Mariners. He's posted a 5.32 ERA and has allowed 10 home runs in 44 innings of work.

He's blown five saves in 29 opportunities in 2019 compared to four saves in 61 opportunities in 2018. It's been night and day for him, and his struggles have cost the Mets dearly.

With the likes of Justin Wilson and Seth Lugo also in the bullpen, the Mets have the firepower to shift the struggling closer into lower-leverage situations. Doing so might give him a chance to get his confidence back.

Yet Callaway refuses to recognize that he might just not have it this year. He's going to continue rolling him out there in high-pressure situations for reasons unknown to baseball fans everywhere.

Buckle up and get used to it, Mets fans. Love him or hate him, Diaz is going to continue to be one of Callaway's go-to guys when it's late and close.
