Mickey Callaway's Continued Trust in Edwin Diaz Makes Absolutely No Sense
By Parker White
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz was arguably the best reliever in the sport last year for the Seattle Mariners, but he's been far from it in 2019.
In 59 relief appearances, Diaz owns a 2-7 record with a 5.88 ERA and seven blown saves. Do those numbers look like someone Mets manager Mickey Callaway should trust late in games?
Diaz's struggles in the ninth and Callaway's incompetence were put on full display Friday night, as the Mets flamethrower came in to close the game, and once again he lost it after giving up a game-tying home run to J.T. Realmuto.
Diaz's stuff looks fine. He's still throwing his fastball in the upper-90's and his slider is still filthy. However, his pitch sequencing is questionable and there's a chance he's tipping his pitches.
Obviously, Callaway needs Diaz and he should be using him. Just not in the ninth inning of a close game.
Whether it's Seth Lugo or even Justin Wilson, Callaway needs to use those guys in the ninth and put Diaz in lower-leverage situations to get his confidence back. Not just a couple times. Diaz shouldn't be closing games for the rest of the season.
It's almost insulting to the other relievers who have put in the work and gotten positive results, helping the Mets claw back into the Wild Card race.
You can have trust in your players, but there should be a tipping point that forces Callaway to switch the bullpen around. It's September and the Mets are still in the Wild Card hunt. You can't worry about feelings at this point in time.
