Mickey Callaway's Explanation for Replacing Steven Matz With Seth Lugo During Mets' Loss is Insane
By Thomas Carannante
Guys, he's lost the plot.
New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway answered for his bizarre decision on Wednesday night when he removed Steven Matz from the game against the Atlanta Braves (after allowing him to hit in the top half of the inning). The left-hander was cruising through six frames with just 79 pitches to his name.
Sure, Seth Lugo has been one of the best relievers in baseball over the past few weeks, but maybe save him for the eighth or the ninth considering that's been his role coupled with the fact the rest of the bullpen is largely suspect?
Don't believe the tweet? Here's video evidence:
100 times out of 100? REALLY?
While this was a pretty bizarre move compounded by incredibly bad luck on Lugo's end (some missed calls from the ump plus a number of softly hit balls that fell in between the defense) the fact that he's not taking an ounce of blame for removing his starter who retired 14 straight batters and didn't even hit 80 pitches yet is irresponsible, to say the least.
Mets fans, we feel your pain. This has to be one of the few times in modern baseball history where a manager opted to use the bullpen when it was seemingly unneeded when the starter could've easily gone AT LEAST one more inning.
